Supporting a Teen After Sexual Abuse: What Parents and Caregivers Should Know
When Your Teen Is Hurting and You Don’t Know What to Do
Finding out that your teenager has experienced sexual abuse can bring up many emotions at once.
You may feel shocked, angry, frightened, protective, or unsure of what to say.

You may be wondering:
💭 “What should I say to her?”
💭 “What if I make things worse?”
💭 “Why won’t she talk to me?”
💭 “How do I know if she needs counselling?”
There is no perfect response.
What matters most is helping your teen feel believed, supported, and safe.
🌿 She does not need you to fix everything. She needs to know she is not alone.
Give Her Space Without Pulling Away
Some teenagers may not want to talk about what happened right away.
She may feel embarrassed, afraid, confused, ashamed, or worried about what could happen if other people find out. She may simply be trying to understand something that feels difficult to put into words.
Try to create opportunities for conversation without pressuring her for details.

You can say:
🩷 “I believe you.”
🩷 “This was not your fault.”
🩷 “You don’t have to tell me everything right now.”
🩷 “I’m here when you’re ready.”
It can also help to avoid questions such as:
❌ “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
❌ “Why didn’t you fight back?”
❌ “Why did you go there?”
Even when these questions come from concern, they can leave a young person feeling blamed.
Instead, try asking:
🌱 “What would help you feel safer right now?”
🌱 “Would you like me to listen, or help you figure out what to do next?”
A calm response can sometimes communicate more safety than having every answer.
Pay Attention to Changes and Let Her Have a Voice
Trauma can affect teenagers in different ways.

You may notice:
○ Becoming more withdrawn or irritable
○ Increased anxiety or fear
○ Difficulty sleeping
○ Changes in school performance
○ Avoiding certain people or places
○ Changes in friendships or relationships
○ Difficulty trusting others
○ Feeling uncomfortable in her body
○ An increased need for privacy
These signs do not automatically mean sexual abuse has occurred. But if you already know your teen has experienced sexual trauma, changes in her emotional well-being or daily life may signal that she needs more support.
It is also important to give her appropriate choices where possible.
Sexual abuse can involve having control taken away, so being included in decisions can help her feel that her voice still matters.
This might mean involving her in choosing a counsellor, deciding when she feels comfortable talking, or identifying what helps her feel safe during appointments.
💗 Healing can include experiencing relationships where her boundaries, choices, and voice are respected.
When Counselling May Help
You do not have to wait until things become a crisis before reaching out for professional support.
Counselling may be helpful if your teen is experiencing:
○ Anxiety or persistent fear
○ Shame or self-blame
○ Low self-esteem
○ Difficulty trusting others
○ Strong emotional reactions
○ Relationship or boundary difficulties
○ Trauma reminders or triggers
○ Changes in school, sleep, friendships, or everyday routines

A trauma-informed therapist can offer a private space where your teen can begin making sense of what she is feeling at her own pace.
And parents need support too.
Learning that your child has been hurt may leave you feeling angry, helpless, guilty, or wondering whether you missed something.
Seeking guidance for yourself can help you remain emotionally present for your teen without feeling as though you have to carry everything alone.
💙 Beyond Crisis™: Support for Teens and Their Families
At Beyond Crisis™, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed counselling for girls and young women who have experienced sexual trauma.
Counselling can help teens understand their trauma responses, develop coping strategies, rebuild confidence and self-trust, and explore healthy boundaries and relationships in a supportive environment.
Parents and caregivers can also receive guidance on how to support their teen while respecting her individual healing process.
As the Clinical Director of Beyond Crisis™ and a Trauma Therapist within the clinic, I want parents and caregivers to remember that healing does not follow one timeline.

🌱 Your teen deserves to feel believed.
🌱 She deserves to feel safe and listened to.
🌱 Her voice and boundaries deserve to be respected.
And you do not have to navigate the next steps by yourself.
If your family could benefit from additional support, Beyond Crisis™ offers a gentle place to begin. You are warmly invited to explore our counselling services or contact us to learn more.
