The Unspoken Exhaustion of Code-Switching

When Being Yourself Doesn't Always Feel Safe at Work

Have you ever walked into work and felt like you had to become a slightly different version of yourself?

  • Maybe you change how you speak.

  • Maybe you're more careful with your tone.

  • Maybe you avoid certain expressions, topics, or parts of your personality because you're worried about how they'll be perceived.

For many Black and racialized women, this experience is so common that it can begin to feel normal.

But just because something is common doesn't mean it isn't exhausting.

The Pressure to Fit In

Many workplaces promote ideas like professionalism, culture fit, and communication standards.

Yet for some Black and racialized women, these expectations can create pressure to constantly monitor how they speak, act, dress, or express themselves.

You may find yourself wondering:

💭 "Will people take me seriously if I say it this way?"

💭 "Am I being perceived as too emotional?"

💭 "Do I need to change how I speak to fit in?"

💭 "Will I be judged if I show up as my authentic self?"

These questions can create a level of stress that others may never see.

The Emotional Cost of Code-Switching

Research suggests that many Black people and people of colour engage in code-switching to navigate environments where they fear discrimination, negative stereotypes, or unfair judgment (Johnson et al., 2021).

While code-switching can sometimes feel necessary for professional survival, it can also come at an emotional cost.

Constantly monitoring yourself requires energy.

It can create anxiety.

It can leave you feeling disconnected from your authentic self.

And over time, it can contribute to stress, exhaustion, and emotional burnout (Johnson et al., 2021).

When You Feel Like You Can't Fully Be Yourself

One of the most difficult parts of code-switching is that it can leave you feeling caught between worlds.

You may feel one version of yourself at work and another version of yourself everywhere else.

You may find yourself wondering whether people truly know you.

Or whether they only know the version of you that feels safest to show.

That can be a lonely experience.

Especially when you're already carrying the pressures of work, family, and everyday life.

You Deserve Spaces Where You Can Exhale

Everyone deserves spaces where they feel seen, respected, and accepted without having to constantly edit themselves.

At Nada Johnson Consulting & Counselling Services, Nada provides culturally responsive, trauma-informed counselling for Black and racialized women navigating workplace stress, anxiety, burnout, self-doubt, and racialized experiences.

Counselling can provide a supportive space to explore the emotional impact of code-switching, workplace pressures, and the challenges of balancing authenticity with professional expectations.

Because carrying the weight of constantly monitoring yourself is exhausting.

And you shouldn't have to carry that burden alone.

With warmth,
