When You’re Holding It All Together… But It’s Taking a Toll

Life can sometimes look stable on the outside.
You are showing up.
Meeting expectations.
Taking care of responsibilities at work and at home.
From the outside, everything may appear to be “fine.”
But internally, it may feel very different.
There can be a quiet sense of exhaustion.
A feeling of always being “on.”
A pressure to keep going, even when you are running low.
If this feels familiar, you are not alone.💚
The Invisible Weight Many Women Carry

Many women, especially Black and racialized women, are often expected to hold multiple roles at once.
To be dependable.
To be strong.
To be the one others can rely on.
Over time, this can create a pattern where you continue to show up for everyone else, while your own needs are placed on the back burner.
For example:
🟢 A woman who is the “go-to” person at work, constantly taking on extra responsibilities
🟢 A daughter who is always the emotional support for her family, even when she feels drained
🟢 A mother who manages her household, career, and relationships without taking time to rest
🟢A partner who avoids expressing her needs to keep the peace
These experiences are more common than many realize.
When Coping Becomes Overfunctioning

At first, these patterns can feel like strength. You are capable, you are managing, and you are getting things done. But over time, this can begin to shift into overfunctioning.
This may show up as feeling like you cannot slow down, struggling to ask for help, or feeling responsible for everything and everyone around you. You may find yourself ignoring your own emotional or physical needs, even as exhaustion builds, continuing to push through because it feels necessary.
Overfunctioning is often not a choice. It is something that develops over time, shaped by expectations, life experiences, and the roles you have learned to take on.
The Impact Over Time
When you are constantly holding everything together, it can begin to take a toll.

You may notice:
✅ Increased irritability or emotional fatigue
✅ Feeling disconnected from yourself
✅ Difficulty relaxing, even when you have the time
✅ A sense of resentment that is hard to name
✅ Physical signs of stress, like tension or burnout
These are not signs that something is wrong with you.
They are signals that something may need your attention.
Creating Space for Yourself

One of the most challenging shifts is allowing yourself to step back. Not because everything will fall apart, but because you deserve space too.
This may begin with small, intentional moments such as pausing before automatically saying yes, noticing when you are taking on more than you can realistically manage, and allowing yourself to rest without guilt. It can also look like beginning to acknowledge your own needs and considering where support may be helpful.
This is not about doing less for others. It is about including yourself in the care you give.
Counselling at NJCCS
At NJCCS, I provide counselling for women who are navigating emotional overwhelm, burnout, and the pressure of holding multiple roles. This includes a focus on supporting Black and racialized

women, while providing culturally inclusive care for all women.
Sessions may support you in:
✅ Understanding patterns of overfunctioning
✅ Learning how to set limits in a way that feels manageable
✅Exploring the emotional impact of always being “the strong one”
✅ Reconnecting with your needs and capacity
✅Building more balance in your daily life
This is a space where you do not have to carry everything on your own.
You Do Not Have to Keep Pushing Through
You may be used to managing everything, holding it all together, and being the one others depend on. Over time, this can begin to feel like something you simply have to continue doing, even when it becomes exhausting.
Support is not about weakness. It is about recognizing that you deserve care too.
You do not have to wait until you are completely overwhelmed.
You can begin to create space for yourself now.
The first step is to book a free 10-minute phone consultation. This is a complimentary and informal conversation to explore your goals and whether this support feels right for you.
You deserve support that allows you to feel more grounded, more balanced, and more connected to yourself.
