Learning Healthy Love When You’ve Never Seen It Up Close

How Family Patterns Show Up in Your Adult Relationships

Some of us grew up in homes where love was present… but it didn’t always feel safe, soft, or easy.

  • Maybe love looked like sacrifice.

  • Maybe it meant being strong and not asking for too much.

  • Maybe it meant showing up for everyone else, even when no one was really showing up for you.

As women, especially as Black and racialized women, we are often taught to carry a lot without question.

And those early experiences don’t just stay in childhood; they quietly shape how we experience love as adults.

How Those Patterns Show Up in Your Relationships

In your relationships today, you may notice patterns that feel hard to explain.

You might:

  • Feel drawn to emotionally unavailable partners

  • Struggle to trust consistency or healthy love

  • Give so much of yourself that you begin to feel lost

And when things don’t work out, it’s easy to turn that inward. To question yourself. To wonder what you’re doing wrong.

But often, what you’re experiencing is not random.

Our early experiences shape how we understand love, connection, and safety. They influence what feels familiar, even when that familiarity comes with pain (Cohen, 2024; Chun, 2018).

The Pressure to Be Strong

Many of the women I work with have spent years being “the strong one.”

  • The one who holds everything together.

  • The one who doesn’t ask for too much.

  • The one who keeps going, no matter what.

So when it comes to relationships, it can feel unfamiliar, even uncomfortable, to be in a space where you are allowed to receive, to be supported, and to be seen.

There can be a quiet tension between what you’ve always known… and what you’re now beginning to want.

The Work We Do Together

In my work with women, I don’t approach this as something to “fix.”

Instead, we take time to understand your patterns with care and without judgment.

Together, we explore:

  • How your early experiences shaped your understanding of love

  • How are those patterns showing up in your current relationships

  • What it might look like to begin creating something different

This work is not about blame. It’s about clarity, compassion, and creating space for change.

And it’s something you don’t have to navigate alone.

You Deserve Something Different

If you’ve been feeling stuck in the same relationship patterns, I want you to know this:

There is nothing wrong with you.

What you’ve learned can be unlearned, gently and at your own pace, in a space where you feel supported and understood.

You deserve relationships that feel steady, respectful, and safe.

And when you’re ready to begin that work, I’m here to support you.

The first step is to book a free 10-minute phone consultation. This is a complimentary and informal conversation to explore your goals and whether this support feels right for you.

You deserve support that allows you to feel more grounded, more balanced, and more connected to yourself.
